The American Legion, an organization of wartime veterans, wrote "Need A Lift," a college financial aid handbook to help all students go as far as they can. The handbook is filled with scholarships, grants, fee waivers, student loans, and the organizations that offer them. There is a section in the books to help children of deceased and disabled veterans in their pursuit of higher education.

| AmeriCorps |
AmeriCorps membership is open to U.S. citizens or lawful residents age 17 and older. Members serve full or part time over a 10- to 12- month period. Upon successful completion of their service, members receive an AmeriCorps Education Award of up to $4,725 to pay for college or graduate school or to pay back qualified student loans. During their service, members receive health coverage, training, and student loan deferment. About half the members also receive a modest annual living allowance.

The Charles J. Lewin Interfaith Scholarship Fund was established to provide scholarships to graduating High School Seniors of Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes, and Plymouth counties. The Fund provides scholarships ranging from $700.00 to $2,000.00.

The Community Foundation's scholarships represent our donors' appreciable understanding of the role education plays in building a better community. The Foundation is pleased to help fulfill donors' wishes as well as to increase the opportunities for students in Southeastern Massachusetts to pursue a higher education. Some of the scholarship recipients are chosen by the fund's donors, some by schools, and others by the Community Foundation Scholarship Committee. |

This scholarship program is available to high school juniors who have a minimum of 2.75 grade point average on a 4.0 scale for their 9th and 10th grades, have demonstrated accomplishments in leadership and community service and have faced a significant roadblock or challenge. Up to ten national scholarships of $25,000 each & 300 state scholarships of $2,500 each are given out each year.

The Boston chapter of the National Association of Asian-American Professionals is once again proud to announce its Future Leader Awards competition. The Girls Going Places Entrepreneurship Award Program is Guardian's annual initiative designed to reward the enterprising spirits of girls ages 12 to 18. Guardian awards prizes to 15 girls who demonstrate budding entrepreneurship; are taking the first steps toward financial independence; make a difference in their schools and communities. Prizes totaling $30,000 are granted to three top winners and 12 finalists each year, to further their entrepreneurial pursuits or save for college. |

| Horatio Alger Scholarship Program |
The Horatio Alger Association seeks to assist students who have:
- enrolled full time as a high school student who will graduate in spring/summer 2009, with plans to enter college no later than the fall following graduation
- intends to pursue a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution
- critical financial need ($50,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is preferred, if higher explanation must be provided)
- involvement in co-curricular and community activities
- minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0, and
- be a United States citizen

The Howard M. & Mary C. Hayward Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to honor the memory of Howard and Mary Hayward who were outstanding Massachusetts agriculturists, land stewards, and devoted environmentalists.
Any graduating senior in the Bristol, Plymouth, Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket counties who will be pursuing further education in agriculture, aquaculture or related science and entering college in the fall is eligible to apply.

| Massachusetts AFL-CIO Scholarship Program |
The Massachusetts AFL-CIO is pleased to announce the 50th Annual Scholarship Awards Program that is available to all seniors in high school throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts who are seeking higher education.
The scholarship exam will consist of 40 'multiple choice" questions and one essay question with a response of 250-500 words. The exam will be administered at NECA on February 6, 2008.
Students interested in taking the labor history exam on February 6, 2008 need to fill out an application which they may get from Mrs. Pratt or from the website and return the completed application to Mrs. Pratt no later than December 21, 2007. Interested students should also download the study guide from the website.

Ten colleges (among them Johnson & Wales, Kettering, C.W. Post, Northeastern, Pace, R.I.T., University of Cincinnati, University of Toledo and Wentworth) participate in the scholarship program. To be eligible for the program, the student must be:
- a U.S. citizen
- a resident of one of the following counties in Massachusetts: Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes, Essex, Middlesex, Nantucket, Norfolk, Plymouth, Suffolk, Worcester or Georgetown, South Carolina
- graduating from a high school located in one of the counties listed above, with a strong academic record, participating in a significant, meaningful mentoring program or relationship during high school that has contributed to the student's ability to overcome challenging life circumstances, and
- planning to enroll fall term for the first time at one of the following eligible colleges and universities in Massachusetts or South Carolina listed on the website.
Awards may be up to $20,000 per year for tuition only and may be renewed for three additional years.

The Prince Henry Society will be awarding twenty-seven thousand dollars ($27,000.00) in scholarships to students who are of Portuguese-American descent, are residents of Greater Fall River Area, and are seeking high education. Students of Portuguese descent who attend school in Fall River, Somerset, Swansea, Westport, Massachusetts and Tiverton, Rhode Island are welcome to apply.

St. Anne's Credit Union will offer eleven $1000 cash scholarships to graduating high school seniors who plan to pursue further education. Membership at St. Anne's Credit Union by the student or the student's parent(s)/guardian(s) is required prior to submission of the scholarship application. Students residing in the following communities are eligible: Acushnet, Assonet, Barrington, Berkley, Dartmouth, Dighton, Fall River, Fairhaven, Freetown, Lakeville, Little Compton, Marion, Mattapoisett, New Bedford, Portsmouth, Rehoboth, Seekonk, Somerset, Tiverton, Wareham, Warren, and Westport.

Shaw-Worth Memorial Scholarship
Each year the scholarship is awarded to a New England high school senior who has made a meaningful contribution to animal protection over a significant period of time. The award consists of $2,000, which is payable to the college or university at which the recipient will be matriculating in 2009. Eligible applicants are from New England public, private, parochial and vocational schools.
